 Final Rounds: Sat/Sun 21/22 March 2015

Saturday saw the eagerly awaited quarter-finals of the Dales sponsored Open Mixed Pairs Competition played in lovely Spring weather. Temperatures were conducive to good bowling and the last 8 certainly did not disappoint. The home pair of Danny Heffernan and Margie O'Leary had a good win over the evergreen Charlie Miller and Evelyn White. The pick of the other ties was the the clash of Pat McDonagh and Pat Whelan of Leinster Bowling Club and the Crumlin "Kelly" father and daughter duo. This resulted in a fine display of Bowling with the Leinster pair advancing.

Dun Laoghaire Bowling Club were well represented by Teresa Reinhardt and Paul Doyle and they advanced at the expense of fellow Dun Laoghaire pair, Jackie Connolly and Marcus Donohue. Some fine bowling by Edna Cashell and Nick Collie could not prevent Michael Cusack and Rita Saunders from winning this quarter-final.

Sunday morning was sunny and, with the temperature rising and the rink warming nicely, a fine day's bowling was in store. The settings were changed by Tournament Director, Roddy O'Leary, to keep everyone on their toes and battle commenced.

Margie O' Leary and Danny Heffernan were fast off the "mat" and built up a good lead against Teresa Reinhardt and Paul Doyle. All was going to plan for the Bray pair but disaster struck when they dropped a 6 with 2 ends left to play. All their experience was called on to steady the ship and they eventually won on the last end !

The second semi-final was a less tense affair and eventually resulted in Michael Cusack and Rita Saunders going through to the afternoon Final.

The Final was an entertaining and tense encounter enjoyed by many Bray members and visitors in lovely sunshine. It was quickly evident that Margie and Danny and Michael and Rita had not used up all their bowling shots in the morning. Both teams settled into a classic game and every shot was loudly applauded by the knowledgeable crowd. It was a marvellous advertisement for Bowls and eventually resulted in Michael Cusack and Rita Saunders from Dun Laoghaire Bowling Club winning the first Dales Mixed Open Competition.

The play off for 3rd and 4th resulted in a win for Pat McDonagh and Pat Whelan from Leinster Bowling Club.

Opening Rounds: Sat/Sun 14/15 March 2015

The Bray Bowling Club Open Mixed Competition started last Saturday at 10:30 with a full house of competitors signing in for combat

The quality of the field was evident by the high standard of play with many "rinks" going to the final end and in some cases the final bowl to decide who progressed.

There was some exceptional bowling from former Bray player Wally Doyle (now Aer Lingus) ably supported by Bray player Jean Keane. Other players to shine were Owen Byrne , Roddy O Leary and Florrie Carroll (all Bray) who gave a marvellous  display of Bowling.

The afternoon session continued the fine bowling with local players Danny Heffernan and Marjie O Leary beating Brian and Rose Walsh with the very last bowl of the final end ! This game was probably the highlight of the opening day and despite the biting cold produced an exceptional contest.

Sunday produced some real fireworks with the joint favourites both being eliminated by Teresa Reinhardt and Paul Doyle and our own Marjie O Leary and Danny Heffernan. The very cold weather did not deter these fine bowlers and they thoroughly deserved to advance to the 1/4 finals !

The final stages of this Competition will be completed next Saturday 21st March (10:30 am) and the semi and Grand final will be played on Sunday 22nd March at 10:30 am and 3:00 pm respectively.

This is a great opportunity to see some of the finest Bowlers playing, test their skills in competition.

All visitors can avail of tea/coffee and biscuits and maybe consider having a go at playing bowls in the coming weeks.

All Welcome.
